A beautiful day today and only 145km along the Flinders Highway from Streaky Bay to Elliston. Elliston is a small town on Waterloo Bay, quiet and unassuming, so far anyway.
Today we drove south past Eyre's Waterhole, where Eyre and his party camped during Eyre's exploration of the area back in 1840, and Murphy's Haystacks, refer last blog. The latter we saw from a distance this time. No wonder the Irishman took them for haystacks.

We passed through Port Kenny which has a grain storage facility but its port does not seem to be active. In fact the town had a lot of closed buildings and it looked poorly.

Perhaps it is because another town called Venus Bay has been constructed on the other side of the actual Venus Bay. Venus Bay is a delightful bay to the south of Point Lebatt (refer last blog). It has a reasonably small opening to the sea. On the southern headland there are some limestone cliffs which are quite spectacular. Some pretty sizeable waves were crashing on the rocks below the cliffs.

We shucked fresh oysters for lunch and sat overlooking Venus Bay as we ate them - with yummy fresh bread.
From Venus Bay we travelled through mile after mile of fields of gold. Most of the time we could see Lake Newlands, a very large salt lake about 25km long.

Elliston has some sights to see we are told, so we have decided to spend a couple of nights here. Some doves presented themselves late in the day.
