Day 187 - Elliston to Coffin Bay and Coffin Bay National Park

Well, we have been assaulted all day by a strong SW wind as we drove through miles and miles of cereal crops.  The countryside changed as we neared Coffin Bay and for the first time for many days were saw sizeable trees.

The wind was very evident at the Cumming's Monument Lookout where we struggled to hold our footing on the clifftops. Fortunately it was blowing us away from the edge! Cumming was a fisherman who lost his life at sea at this point.  It is a dangerous looking coast.

Driving was uncomfortable so we stopped at Coffin Bay,150 km from Elliston.

The wind was still blowing strongly in Coffin Bay, but, not wishing to miss the opportunity, we decided to take in the Coffin Bay National Park.

A couple of the locals were happy to see us and came out of the bush to wave us by.

The National Park is serviced by an excellent bitumen road through the park but the side roads to the attractions were atrocious.  One was so bad we did not complete it.  They were extremely rough with limestone nodules/rocks covering the road - exceptionally bumpy - and it was so bad at one stage we dropped to low range to "wriggle" our way over the rocks.

The southern side of the park is all sand, particularly at Almonta Beach. We have never seen so much sand, let alone seeing it on the move, its motion accelerated by the strong wind. Our clothes, shoes and eyes were filled with the sand.  The wind was so strong in places that it blew chips of rock off the friable cliff tops.

The sand went several km inland
There are several bays in the Coffin Bay region and we were delighted for the first time since entering oyster heaven coast, to actually see the oysters, on racks, in the bay. Hopefully we will see more tomorrow.  There were none at Yangie Bay.

The more distant views today were spoiled by the dust and sea mist in the atmosphere caused by the wind.  It spoiled what otherwise would have been a great day.

We were glad to see a few mountains in the distance today, albeit through a murky sky. This is a change from the flat country we have been experiencing over the last couple of weeks.

Downing tools now - for oysters!
