7 June 2017 - around Georgetown

We had a day off today to catch up with the big blog from yesterday's travels and some home duties.  Late afternoon we went for a walk around the town and captured a couple of photographs, which are included for the record.

070617 Freemason's Hall Georgetown

070617 Jeff's Folly (maybe because cattle could walk around it)

070617 The Antbed House

070617 The heritage plaque outside the Antbed House

070617 Town Hall (we think)

070617 Two very large mango trees
The Antbed House was erected c. 1890, probably as a mine manager's residence. It is the only surviving adobe house identified in North Queensland towns, and is constructed of bricks made of antbed from termite mounds. Antbed was used more commonly for floors, tennis courts, and mortar or to seal slab buildings, but rarely for bricks.  It is being restored - slowly.

070617  Explanation
Tomorrow we head for Mount Surprise, our stopping point for a visit to Copperfield Gorge near the town of Einasleigh.
