Day 214 - Cape Jervis and surrounds

Today we took a leisurely drive around Cape Jervis. We spent some time watching the Kangaroo Island ferry being loaded.  The cars and semi trailers were packed in like sardines.  There are two ferries operating and they seem to be going all the time. There are a trailer loads of sheep coming off the island because a poor rainy season has meant pastures are being eaten out.

The coast line to the NW of Cape Jervis is quite rugged.

There are many valleys ending up at the sea and these are the sites for some of the smaller towns.  Unfortunately the round, undulating hills are not green except where they are covered by pine plantations.  The valleys are a little greener and in the valley leading down to Rapid Bay, there was a carpet of purple on the valley's side and floor.

The various towns were quiet with only a few hardy fishermen and fisherwomen braving the coolish breeze to see what they could catch.  They fish mostly for squid.

There has been little development down on the Peninsula and that which has occurred, is looking a bit tired and unused.  The exception maybe the Marina St Vincent where an excellent harbour has been built.  Maybe there is an improvement in summer time.  The beaches are not "crackers" by any means.  There is no surf on this part of the coastline so its attractions are limited.

That aside, the views of rolling hills, sweeping views across farms and occasional forests, can't be ignored.  It is a shame the place is so dry.  Does not mean they are giving up raising sheep and alpacas.
