Day 22 - From Zeehan, Trial Harbour, Granville Harbour, Reece Dam

Today the sun came out - once.  That did not stop us however from heading north from Zeehan into the mountains, the rain and the mist, to take in a couple of coastal sites and Reece Dam.  We included in the day, a drive up to the Pieman River on the southern side and opposite Corrina.  We had visited Corinna a few days ago for the Pieman River Cruise. While we had rain off and on all day, the temperature hovered around a moderate 16 degrees.

180315 The turnoff to Trial Harbour - a great way to start the day
Trial Harbour is about 22km off the Zeehan-Corrina road.  We passed through forests, then open boulder strewn plains until we rolled down an escarpment to the small township of Trial Harbour.  It used to be the port for Zeehan but it was not well protected and subsequently lost out to Strahan on Macquarie Harbour to the south.  It is now a fishing village.  The coast north of Trial Harbour is quite rocky but to its south, there is a large sweeping beach ending at Macquarie Heads.  The beach was barely visible through the mist and rain.

Next port of call was Granville Harbour about 25km north of Trial Harbour as the crow flies, but 55km by road.  To get there we passed by Mount Heemskirk and crossed over the Heemskirk River. Granville Harbour is slightly larger than Trial Harbour.  An obviously biased Trial Harbour resident we spoke to, described it as "a fishing village trying to be a town. They have fences".

After a brief stop at the punt site on the Pieman River, we completed our day's tasks with a visit to Reece Dam on the Pieman River.  It is quite a large dam and, of course, has a power station attached. There is a sizeable lake, Lake Pieman behind the dam.

Our day was brightened somewhat when country humour came to visit us again and Mother Nature showed off its inevitable class.

Once again we have an uncertain weather forecast for tomorrow but irrespectively, we will be heading off to Strahan.
