Day 23 part 2 - Strahan to Queenstown and Return

The road to Queenstown is 43km long and passes through rain forests on twisty, turning roads, which, by and large, were very good.  The only trouble was it poured all the way there and back. However the rain decreased as we got down to the coast again.

We went to Queenstown to deliver our computer for repair and we were a bit worried when we saw the repairman's house.

190315 This was where we had to leave the computer fro repairs - a bit of a worry?
Not to waste what was left of a fast diminishing day we decided to continue on 6km to Strahan’s Ocean Beach and then a further 11km to Hell’s Gate at Macquarie Heads.

Ocean Beach stretches all the way from Trial Harbour and is a beautiful wide sandy beach, backed by some sizeable sand dunes. The sand is a light brown colour.

Macquarie Heads are at the entrance to Macquarie Harbour.  The harbour is about twice the size of Sydney Harbour.  The entrance is very narrow, about 60m, so needless to say it has restricted the development of Strahan as a major port for its hinterland’s mining production.  Many ships foundered and many lives were lost at Hell’s Gate.

For the first time we ventured out on to sand in the Land Cruiser to get closer to the Heads.  This was another new experience for us but we would have to admit it was “a piece of cake” as the sand was firm and stable.

We passed a pine tree forest at Swan Basin and saw a couple of what could best be described as fairy dells.

We do the Macquarie Harbour cruise tomorrow, which includes a trip up the lower reaches of the Gordon River, which of course enters into Macquarie Harbour.
