Day 42 - Port Arthur to Triabunna

Our patience has been rewarded with sun for 100% of the day.  Combined with a temperature maximum of 14 degrees this made for a very pleasant day.

Today we drove the 126 km from Port Arthur to the town of Triabunna in relative comfort. Once we got back to Sorell the road changed from up and downy, roundabouty, to a relatively flat highway. There were some hills but none of those large mountains with which we have become so familiar.

We set up camp at Triabunna in the sun, the first time we have done so since we have been in Tasmania.  Triabunna and the nearby town of Orford are access places for Maria Island, a large island a few kilometres off the coast.  It too was once a penal settlement.  We are trying to get a cruise around the island tomorrow but with no luck so far.

There seemed little of tourist interest at Triabunna so we retraced our steps to Orford, about 6 km away and took in the local beaches, Spring, Shelly and Rheban.  There was a lookout atop one of the nearby hills so up we rattled, the road very rocky but dry, until we reached The Thumbs Lookout.  It provided a panoramic view of Maria Island and points south.  What a change to see these beautiful views in the sunlight.

This was a relatively short day in terms of feverish tourist activity so the photographs are few and we are a little better for an early finish.  We have been recommended to sample the fish and chips from a local servery.  Who are we to argue, after all we do allow ourselves one night a week without cooking ourselves.
