Day 55 - Ralph's Falls and Launceston

Another beautiful morning this morning with a temperature of around 9 degrees.  During the day we had intermittent cloud and a temperature maximum of around 17 degrees, although it was cooler in the mountains.

We had to stay another night in Bridport because our plumber had first to identify the fitting which had failed, then acquire one today and fit it this evening.  We are all good to go now.

This extra night meant we had to find something to do to fill up our extra day.  We decided to retrace our steps somewhat, in fact back to Legerwood, the place of the wood carvings, from where we could take the road up to Mt Victoria and see Ralph's Falls.

The drive to the base of Mt Victoria was uneventful, even beautiful.  However we could see the clouds swirling around the top of the mountain, so we were a bit apprehensive.  When we saw a sign that said the Ralph's Falls Lookout was closed, then we knew we had to throw caution to the wind and have a go.

The road up the mountain was not the best.  It was as rough as all get out for most of the way and, at one stage, we chose to use 4WD.  We knew the views behind us would be good but there was no place to stop, so narrow was the road.

In spite of all the trials and tribulations we made it to the top of the mountain and, in the at times swirling mist,  headed off on the walk, which took in Ralph's Falls and Cash's Gorge. The track to the Falls Lookout was indeed shut due to storm damage so we were unable to see the Falls themselves.  We have included some third party photos of the Falls and the view from the Lookout, along with photos of our own.

We were able to get to Cash's Gorge via a walk through a myrtle forest.  The gorge itself was spectacular, as was the view from the gorge's lookout.

To fill in the day we headed off to Launceston and then back to Bridport.  We were able to travel over some roads which otherwise we might not have covered.  Launceston got but a passing glance, as we will visit it later.  We did see a couple of excellent views and a magnificent vineyard on the way.

This was not a bad way to fill in an extra day and we only covered 256km.
