Day 73 - El Questro and Wyndham

Today we did 333km on a trip to El Questro, Wyndham and return.  El Questro Wilderness Park is the centre of many gorges and thermal springs.  We drove into Emma Gorge and to the El Questro Resort but did not tackle any of the major gorge walks.  The last 16km into El Questro was gravel and very dusty with the only respite from the dust being the drive through the Pentecost River.  The road into the El Questro turnoff (the Gibb River Road) is bitumen but thereafter changes to gravel.  This road is the shorter road to Derby but is infamous for its roughness so we will be going via the other longer route via Halls Creek.

We stopped by The Grotto as we moved on to Wyndham.  Sadly there was no water evident at The Grotto.

Wyndham is a small town on Cambridge Gulf.  There is a small port there which services the towns inland from Wyndham eg Kununurra.  Some tourist boats visit there too.  The tide movement in Cambridge Gulf was something to see and the water was a muddy colour.  Quite large salt flats link the rivers to the higher country.  Behind the town is a high mountain called The Bastion.  At its top is The Five River Lookout.  King, Pentecost, Durack, Forrest and Ord Rivers are all visible from the top as they enter into Cambridge Gulf.  It was a very impressive sight.
