Day 76 - Bungle Bungles

A comfortable 253km drive from Kununurra along the Great Northern Highway brought us to the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park. The road today wound its way along and between mountain ranges and the scenery changed continually.  The ranges were, at times, of different coloured rock on each side of the road.  Then we would be driving through a wide valley with countless streams intersecting the road, some dry, some with water but none flowing with any velocity.

The Caravan Park is one km of dusty road off the highway and 53km from the Bungles.  We are told the road into the Bungles is pretty bad so we decided to do a fixed wing flight over the range this afternoon.  Tomorrow we might drive in to the Bungles but then, we might not.  The Bungle Bungles is a mountain range about 70km long and 55km wide and is composed of multicoloured sandstone, the most famous outcrops of which are called the Beehives.  They are domed outcrops of rock with coloured bands across them and are quite beautiful.  There are two major gorges (but there are others), the Cathedral Gorge and the Piccaninny Gorge, with sides up to 300m high.  The range is in the Purnululu National Park. To see them from the air gave us some perspective of their area but there is the other perspective, up close and personal.  It is a shame it is such a bad road in.
