Day 93 - Port Hedland to Munjina (Auski Roadhouse)

Last night we photographed the sunset over Port Hedland.  The town and port lights twinkled in the twilight and it was just beautiful.

We set off from Port Hedland on a cool morning to head towards Mudjina where we were to overnight so that we could visit the Karijini National Park.  This is on the road to Newman, the town near to BHPB's iron ore mine site.  Today we did 266km firstly through the predictable flat plain lands and then, almost without notice, we were confronted by a second Devil's Marbles, but maybe covering even a greater area.  The rocks were coloured a bright orange.  The rocks and ranges continued with us to Mudjina.

The road was "as busy as Burke Street" with ore trucks assailing us going and coming.  There must be a big haulage company around here by the name of "Road Train", because 99% of the trucks have that name on them.  Seriously though Volvo, White, Western Star, ERF and other large truck suppliers must love this place.  We must have passed at least 60 road trains on the road today.  The road today was magnificent in spite of being traversed so consistently by these heavy road trains.

The Auski Roadhouse is on the main Newman Road but otherwise is in the middle of no where.  It is coloured red from what must be dust from a never ending barrage of trucks and other traffic stopping for fuel, for food or for a call of nature.  Mind you the front apron is dirt, not concrete, and is the source of the dust and colour.  We did manage to find a camp spot with some grass and, on another positive note, we can get Foxtel for the big game tomorrow night.  Go the Maroons.

Trivia of the day:

  • Some humorous soul planted an Australian flag atop an isolated hill on Newman Road.  It was an outstanding effort
  • The most common words on the CB radio are "mate" and "eh?"
  • The least used letter on the CB radio is "g"
  • One can't be sure as to the accuracy of these assessments because most of the time one can't understand what is being said
