Day 38 Kings Canyon and Kathleen Springs

Today we walked up Kings Canyon but did not undertake the 6km walk around the rim.  One photograph below gives you an idea of the first few hundred metres.  The canyon is spectacular with cliff faces over hundred metres high.  The cliffs are a rich red colour.  There are sandstone boulders in the creek bed of quite some size, which have fallen from the walls.  It is a place of significance to the local aborigines.  Our second walk was to Kathleen Springs, which are at the head of Kathleen Gorge.  This is a small gorge and the creek bed was covered with many wild flowers and grasses, which had sprung anew after recent rains.  There was also evidence of fire, which ran through the gorge about 18 months ago.  Up until the sixties the gorge was used to manage mustered cattle and there were post and wire remnants of the fences used for this purpose.
